Alaskan Sockeye Salmon Portions

Our wild-caught sockeye is our most popular salmon! We bring it to you from the pristine waters of Bristol Bay, Alaska. Portions are the go-to cut if you're looking for a quick meal or an extravagant dinner. Sockeye packs all the nutrients you're looking for in wild salmon and will not disappoint with its bold flavor.

Each portion serves 1 person.

About our sockeye.

With a firm texture and rich flavor, sockeye salmon is prized by discerning palates worldwide. Our wild-caught salmon is conveniently cut into 5 to 7 oz. portions, while their skin-on, boneless presentation makes meal prep a snap. Grill, bake, or broil the portions to savor pure salmon flavor  any day of the week.

What makes our sockeye special?

Sockeye's amazing life cycle, with up to four years in the cold waters of North Pacific, ensures a true salmon taste and a brilliant orange-red hue that’s signature to wild-caught salmon. We fish this sockeye in the pristine waters of Bristol Bay, Alaska, a world-class fishery focused on sustainability. Our catch is placed in refrigerated sea water within minutes of harvest, and flash-frozen within hours , providing unmatched fresh flavor.

What about the health benefits?

Considered a true superfood, sockeye's unique habitat and diet creates an unmatched combination of health benefits. With  its abundance of omega-3s, vitamin D, and astaxanthin (the antioxidant that gives it its orange-red hue), sockeye is ideal for supporting your healthy lifestyle.

Why we love it!

Captain Steve describes sockeye as “the performance athlete of the sea". Our wild-caught,  Alaskan sockeye is our most popular catch for a reason:  It offers pure salmon flavor and a delicious, firm texture that can only come from seafood harvested at the peak of its life cycle.  You can be sure that our skin-on, boneless filets  will combine convenience, nutrition, and flavor into every six-ounce portion.

Sockeye portion recipe

Seafood continues to cook after it’s removed from the heat, so take it off just as soon as it starts to flake. We often tell our customers that if they think their fish is almost done cooking-- it’s done! Slide a sharp knife tip into the center of the thickest part of a cooking salmon portion, checking for color and an internal temperature of at least 145°F.

Grilling

Most fish cooks best over a medium-high flame. Ensure the grill is hot before you start cooking. Liberally brush oil onto the grill or cooking surface just prior to cooking. Planking is a great way to add subtle flavor to your wild Alaska Seafood while also offering an impressive serving platter. Find out more on how to cook with planks here.

  1. Oil lightly and season fish to the desired amount.
  2. Grill skin-on salmon cuts skin side down for best results.
  3. Cook portion approximately 10 minutes per inch of thickness.

Baking

  1. Rinse and pat fillets dry.
  2. Spread a thin coat of cooking oil over salmon portion.
  3. Coat bottom of an oven-safe pan with cooking oil.
  4. Sprinkle seasonings over fish.
  5. Bake in 375°F oven for 10-12 minutes per inch of thickness.

Broiling

  1. Preheat the broiler to Med/High.
  2. Rinse and pat fillets dry.
  3. Place parchment paper inside a shallow, nonmetal dish and seafood portion on top of the parchment, skin side down.
  4. Top with cooking oil and seasonings of choice.
  5. Broil the fish 4 to 6" from the heating element for 5 to 6 min or until fish reaches an internal temp of 145F (no need to turn or flip).

What does “Sustainably Harvested” mean?

For sockeye salmon, the Alaska State Department of Fish and Game monitors all commercial, sport, and residential salmon fishing. This means a set number of permits are sold each season based on predictions of the number of salmon expected to return to spawn. As the salmon move towards the bay, researchers actively monitor their movement and count the number of salmon in each school. They then use this data to determine when the fishermen are allowed to fish, if the volume of salmon is too low they are not allowed to fish. Once the volume rises to a number which allows for enough fish to escape upstream to spawn, the fishermen are given a set amount of time that they are allowed to fish. This timed fishing allowance and escapement number is vital to the sustainability of salmon.

+

How should I store my seafood?

We guarantee the quality of our products to be maintained for one year from purchase when kept in proper conditions. All seafood should be kept in a freezer that maintains even temperature, do not store any seafood on the door or towards the front of the freezer, and do not stack other items on top of seafood. If your seafood loses its vacuum seal, plan to use those pieces first! They are still completely safe to eat but are more prone to freezer burn. Freezer burn is the process of water being pulled from the fish and turned into ice crystals.

+

Where is my order being sent from?

All Wild for Salmon orders are shipped from Bloomsburg Pennsylvania. The owner and Fisherman, Steve Kurian, is a PA native. Each summer he travels to AK to fish for sockeye salmon which is flash-frozen, vacuum sealed, and transported through cold storage to our store in Bloomsburg, PA where Steve and his family reside.

+

Can I get a bulk discount?

+

What does “Wild-Caught” mean?

Our fish are harvested in their natural environment. They spend their life in the open waters and eat their natural diet. You can read more about why "Wild-Caught" is healthier for both you and the fish in our blog.

+

How are the salmon caught?

Our sockeye salmon are caught using a stationary gillnet, meaning we set our nets with small buoys to float at the top of the water and then the anchor holds one end of the bottom of the net taut, so the net is against the open current. The salmon then swim into the net and are caught by the gills, once caught the nets are pulled on board. As each salmon comes on board it is removed from the net by our deckhands placed on a rubber slide so they do not hit the floor of the boat and become bruised. This slide then moves them to another deckhand who bleeds each individual salmon and then places it into a refrigerated circulating seawater storage tank below. All salmon are then processed within 12 hours of being caught by our trusted processor Leader Creek Fisheries. Processing includes flash freezing and vacuum sealing.
